FINAL EXAM INSTRUCTIONS

Exam CHANGE:

THE FINAL EXAM HAS BEEN CHANGED TO A TAKE-HOME ESSAY.

Since the only exam time our class can meet is Thursday, February 23, and because grades are due the following day at NOON, the IN-CLASS portion of our final exam has been cancelled.

NEW DIRECTIONS:

TURNING IT IN: The final exam is NOW DUE AT OR BEFORE WEDNESDAY AT 5 PM AS A HARD COPY LEFT IN AN ENVELOPE ON THE PROFESSOR'S DOOR or IN THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT IN HIS MAILBOX. THE OFFICE IS M 120-E; THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT IS LOCATED IN E-103.

Students are strongly advised to turn in the exam BEFORE THE FINAL DEADLINE AT 5 PM. Emailed exams will only be accepted in an emergency, and permission must be granted 48 hours in advance. The professor will not be responsible for emailed attachments that don't open or exams left after the deadline.

Documents: Students will receive the final "document" to be considered for the exam at the end of the final class.

Exam Goal: The goal of the exam is to create an argument about the cause of the 1943 Harlem riot using the documents provided as evidence. Students must find a way to incorporate these documents to support their points about why the 1943 riot occurred. Students are also strongly encouraged to make connections between the 1943 Harlem riot and other riots we have studied in class. Students do not have to quote from specific scenes from class texts about those other riots, but they should refer to key words, key ideas, key characters, or key scenes from those texts where appropriate.

Exam Structure: Students should compose a thesis statement in their introduction that refers to the main arguments they will cite for the 1943 Harlem riot. Their essay should contain topic sentences, close-reading of specific passages, and critical thinking that interprets the meaning of the evidence they cite.
